Hi neighbor,

June Gloom may be settling in, but this week’s issue still has plenty worth stepping out for: a nearby trail spot for slow walks and birdwatching, election results that are starting to shape November, and a Camarillo shelter dog getting her turn in the spotlight.

Let’s get into it.

☀️ Weekend Weather

Local forecast via Grant @CamWX

🌫️ June Gloom Is Running the Show

Thursday and Friday stay mild with morning fog burning off to sunshine and highs in the low 70s. The weekend is a different story: a large low pressure system moving over the West Coast brings a cooling trend starting Friday, with 2 to 4 degrees of cooling each day through Saturday. Expect a deeper marine layer, later clearing times, and possibly no clearing at all along the coast Saturday afternoon. Looks like June Gloom is sticking around for a while.

🎉 Out This Week: Bugs, Birds, and Pride

This week’s picks are all about getting outside: a free insect festival in Oxnard, a guided bird walk with Sammy Cowell, and Camarillo Pride’s fifth year at Constitution Park.

🐛 Oxnard Insect Festival

Saturday · 10am–4pm · Plaza Park, Downtown Oxnard

The Oxnard Insect Festival returns to Plaza Park with a full day of bug-themed family fun, including education booths, vendors, food trucks, photo ops, arts and crafts, a butterfly tent, petting zoo, cricket theater, wagon train, and more. This year’s festival features all things bees, and admission is free.

🐦 Bird Walk with Sammy Cowell

Conejo Valley Audubon Society is hosting a free morning bird walk led by Sammy Cowell of Birding With Sammy, who readers may remember from our recent guide to noticing birds in Ventura County. The walk will focus on local nesting birds and how people can share observations through the eBird mobile app as part of the California Bird Atlas Big Weekend.

🌈 Camarillo Pride 2026

Saturday · 12–4pm · Constitution Park

Camarillo Pride returns to Constitution Park for its fifth year with a free, family-friendly afternoon of outdoor games, arts and crafts, storytime, bingo, face painting, teen activities, live music, performances, local resource booths, and food available for purchase. The event is free to attend.

Election-night results are in, but Ventura County will continue counting eligible ballots in the days ahead.

🗳️ Camarillo’s primary results are in, mostly

Election-night results are starting to show what November could look like for Camarillo voters: a new congressional matchup, a surprise in the county schools race, and a local supervisor who may avoid a runoff altogether.

Barcelona Street house fire sends one person to hospital

Ventura County and Oxnard firefighters responded May 29 to a structure fire in the 100 block of Barcelona Street in Camarillo, where crews found heavy fire and a well-established attic fire.

According to Ventura County Fire Department PIO, firefighters deployed multiple hose lines, worked to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring homes, and later reported that most of the fire had been knocked down. Crews continued checking the attic for smoldering pockets of fire while investigators worked to determine the cause.

One patient with minor burn injuries was transported to a local hospital.

🥤 Deputies will be handing out Slurpee coupons this summer

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is bringing back Operation Chill, a summer program that lets deputies and station staff reward local kids with free small Slurpee coupons when they spot positive behavior.

That could include wearing a helmet, following street safety rules, helping someone, picking up trash, or holding a door. The coupons can be redeemed at participating 7-Eleven, Speedway, or Stripes stores.

The program includes the Camarillo Police Department and other Sheriff’s Office stations across Ventura County.

🪶Local Spotlight: Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa

A group walks the trail at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa, a nearby spot for easy hikes, birdwatching, and Boney Mountain views.

Before you even hit the trail at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa in Newbury Park, the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center is worth a stop. It's a small exhibit on the Chumash history of the land, right at the trailhead.

The main Satwiwa Loop Trail is 3.6 miles with 472 feet of elevation gain, rated easy and typically taking 1.5 to 2 hours. Open meadows, chaparral, a pond, and views toward Boney Mountain. Good for a slow walk, first-time birding, or letting kids spot lizards, hawks, and rabbits in the brush.

If you want more, the trail system connects to longer routes into the Santa Monica Mountains, including a seasonal waterfall on the Old Boney Trail and the Fossil Trail. Those get more serious. Bring a downloaded map, and know that dogs are welcome on leash in the main park but are not allowed past the park boundary into Point Mugu State Park.

This is also where Sammy Cowell of Birding With Sammy is leading Friday morning's bird walk with Conejo Valley Audubon Society. If you read our Ventura County birding guide and want to put it to immediate use, this is the spot.

Parking is free and restrooms are at the main lot. Go early. The trail gets exposed and sunny fast once you're out past the cultural center.

🐾 Pet of the Week

Meet Noira

German Shepherd Dog · Spayed female · 1 year, 11 months

Noira is a young German Shepherd at the Camarillo Animal Shelter who came into the Camarillo shelter scared and alone. She's not that dog anymore. Now she’s the poster girl for this weekend’s California Adopt-a-Pet Day event, and she has plenty to show off: she loves fetch, learns quickly, and gives out cuddles once she trusts you. She may need slow introductions with other dogs, but she has done well with kids, adults, seniors, and even a cat.

Animal ID: A876239 · Kennel: 030

California Adopt-a-Pet Day is Saturday, June 6 from 1–6pm at the Camarillo and Simi Valley shelters, with adoption fees covered for every pet thanks to support from the ASPCA in partnership with CalAnimals. Appointments receive priority, but walk-ins are welcome.

Most adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and basic preventative care.
