Hi neighbor,
June Gloom is here, but this week’s issue has range: sword-fighting demos on the library lawn, a brewery-backed 5K, and a free e-bike safety check for local families. We’re also looking at the Camarillo Airport vote that drew 19 written objections, Dolly Parton’s book program coming to Ventura County, the next step for Arneill Road supportive housing, and Firo, a shelter dog who may know commands in two languages.
Let’s get into it.
☀️ Weekend Weather

Local forecast via Grant @CamWX
🌫️ June Gloom Is Running the Show
June is doing June things. Expect morning June Gloom to return through at least Saturday, with areas of low clouds and fog developing overnight and lingering into the morning hours. Meanwhile, high pressure overhead and weaker onshore flow are giving us a brief taste of summer, with temperatures running warmer than they have over the past couple of weeks.
A stronger sea breeze returns this weekend, bringing a few degrees of cooling and helping temperatures settle back toward seasonal levels. Beyond that, there isn't much change in the forecast, with a fairly typical early-summer pattern expected to persist through next week.

E-bike collisions in Camarillo doubled last year. The Camarillo Police Department is hosting a free morning to help families get ahead of it. Bring a child's e-bike for a free safety and legality check, ask questions, and hear from local experts about current laws. The department is clear: this is an educational event, not an enforcement one.
If you want the full picture on what's happening on local streets before you go, we covered it in May.

🛩 County approves airport fees despite Camarillo Airport objections
Ventura County supervisors unanimously approved the Department of Airports’ annual rent and fee schedule Tuesday, along with authority for county airport officials to execute leases, permits, extensions, and related agreements. The vote came after 19 written public comments were submitted on the item.
The objections focused less on the fee changes, which the airport director described as minor, and more on leasing authority that commenters tied to a pending Camarillo Airport hangar redevelopment proposal. Several residents argued the top-ranked proposal could replace smaller hangars with larger executive hangars, raise rents for local pilots, and open the door to more corporate jet activity. Some also asked the FAA to review the process.
No one requested to speak during the hearing, and the Board approved the item without addressing the hangar concerns in discussion.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library could bring free books to Ventura County children from birth to age 5.
📚 Dolly Parton's Book Program Is Coming to Ventura County
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to launch Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Ventura County, making it the 46th county program in California.
The program mails one free book per month to enrolled children from birth through age five. Books are available in English and Spanish, and there is no cost to families. The Ventura County Library Foundation will handle fundraising and serve as the local partner, while the county library system manages enrollment and outreach. California is currently matching local partner costs, which made the program financially viable to launch.
The foundation is aiming to open registration by September. About 44,000 children in Ventura County fall in the birth-to-five age range, and organizers are hoping to reach roughly half of them. Already, 2,000 families have added their names to a waiting list at the Dollywood Foundation.
City Awards Contract for Arneill Road Supportive Housing
The Camarillo City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to award a $5.94 million construction contract to SBS Corporation for the Arneill Road Permanent Supportive Housing project, with contingency bringing the total authorization to about $6.8 million for a nine units for formerly homeless residents at 268 Arneill Road. The council also rejected a bid protest from Riviera Construction Group, a competing bidder.
The project is funded largely through a $7.3 million state grant and will pair housing with on-site case management through Project H.O.P.E. One catch surfaced during discussion: staff said the grant covers only the first three to four months of operations, and the city is still looking for money to keep services running after that. Units are expected to be ready by early 2027.
🌊 Local Spotlight: Where the Creek Goes
This weekend’s 5K passes near a stretch of Calleguas Creek, the channel many of us cross without thinking twice. But that water is part of a much bigger local story, one that connects Camarillo to endangered steelhead, Mugu Lagoon, and a rare coastal marsh hiding at the edge of the county.
🐾 Pet of the Week: Firo

Firo is a 1-year-old Chinese Sharpei mix at the Camarillo Animal Shelter who is ready for family life. He has lived successfully with young kids, teens, and adults, and is reported to have done well with dogs and cats. Oh, and he may know "sit" and "shake" in both English and Spanish.
Animal ID: A870669 · Kennel: 107
Ventura County Animal Services has adoptable pets at the Camarillo and Simi Valley shelters. Adoption fees vary by animal, including $120 for dogs for Ventura County residents, $85 for cats, $50 for rabbits, and $15 for turtles and tortoises.
Most adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and basic preventative care.
